Ride-hailing giant, Uber has firmly stated its stance against sharing the personal data of its riders with the Lagos State Government. This decision comes amidst ongoing discussions and disagreements between Uber and the state authority regarding data sharing arrangements.
Despite recent challenges faced by Uber drivers regarding the state’s authority over data sharing, the company asserts its commitment to cooperation with the government, albeit within the bounds of agreed terms. However, this declaration has sparked concerns among riders who fear potential government monitoring through data shared by Uber and other ride-hailing firms.
The Country Manager of Uber Nigeria, Tope Akinwunmi responded to inquiries regarding the nature of data to be shared with the government clarifying that under the Data Sharing Agreement, Uber agreed to share aggregated trip data only, excluding any personally identifiable information of users. He emphasized Uber’s adherence to data protection laws and global best practices, prioritizing user privacy and data integrity.
Addressing past misunderstandings leading to the impoundment of some vehicles, Akinwunmi stated that Uber is actively working towards API integration, with timelines communicated to the government. He reiterated Uber’s commitment to honoring the terms of the Data Sharing Agreement, which includes daily sharing of aggregated trip data via a secure folder solution, while progressing towards API integration.
In response to the matter, Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, clarified the government’s stance explaining that all e-hailing platforms operating in the state, except Uber, independently signed the data-sharing agreement. He noted that the aim of the agreement is to bolster the security and safety of e-hailing services, with API integration facilitating verification processes for drivers and passengers, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
Highlighting the significance of API integration, Osiyemi emphasized its role in enhancing safety measures by reducing risks associated with unauthorized individuals operating as drivers. Additionally, real-time tracking through API integration enables prompt response during emergencies, further enhancing user safety.
The Commissioner highlighted Lagos State’s proactive adoption of API integration, aligning with global best practices in ensuring user safety and regulatory compliance within the e-hailing industry.
