Spotify has officially launched its Greasy Tunes Café in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, an experiential pop-up designed to celebrate the fusion of Nigerian food, culture, and music. The three-week campaign, unveiled on Tuesday, September 30, brought together media personalities, influencers, podcasters, artists, and fans for an evening of music and conversation. Backed by new Spotify data showing the central role of music and food in the daily lives of Nigerian Gen Z, the initiative aims to showcase how Afrobeats continues to dominate listening habits throughout the day.
The café offers a unique experience where customers can order local Nigerian meals and instantly receive personalised Spotify playlists or podcasts curated in real-time based on their food choices. Spotify executives Bea Theron, Experiential Marketing Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa, and Victor Okpala, Artist and Label Partnerships Manager for West Africa, emphasised that the project is rooted in hyper-local storytelling. Theron described the café as “a future-facing model blending the force of Afrobeats with the authenticity of local cuisine,” while Okpala highlighted its role as both a launchpad for talent and a cultural education hub.
As part of its programming, Spotify announced plans to spotlight emerging Nigerian artists such as Fola and Adekunle Gold, while also scheduling cultural events like an October 11th documentary screening on Afro-Nigerian Afro-funk and the Eyo masquerade. The night also featured fireside chats with South African artist Thakzin and Afrobeats act Fola, both celebrated as among the platform’s most-streamed emerging talents of the 2020s. They shared personal stories about perseverance, creativity, and their vision for pushing African music to new global heights.
The evening ended on a high note with electrifying performances by DJ Dami Osinubi, as guests danced, networked, and enjoyed authentic Nigerian meals. With Greasy Tunes Café, Spotify signalled its commitment to deepening cultural ties in Lagos, offering a platform that celebrates music, creativity, and community while setting the stage for the city’s evolving cultural future
