The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has granted the Gateway International Airport in Ogun State an Aerodrome Operational Permit, paving the way for the commencement of commercial air transport services. Governor Dapo Abiodun described the approval as a historic milestone, noting that it marks the first time a newly constructed airport in Nigeria has been certified under current regulatory standards. The approval follows rigorous technical inspections, on-site verification, and a facility audit by the NCAA, which lauded the airport as a model for future aviation infrastructure in the country.

According to the certification, the airport has been assigned an Aerodrome Reference Code of 3C and an Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Services Category 6 rating. It will operate daytime flights from sunrise to sunset, with a non-precision approach for Runway 05/23 and support for Area Navigation procedures. Abiodun revealed that a global logistics firm has committed to operating two weekly cargo flights from London to the facility, alongside passenger flights to Abuja and Port Harcourt.

The airport has also been designated as an alternate landing site for Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport, enhancing its strategic importance for both domestic and international aviation. Governor Abiodun stressed that the facility is set to become a key driver of trade, investment, and tourism in Ogun State, offering world-class infrastructure and improved connectivity.

Highlighting the commendations received from NCAA officials, Abiodun said the Gateway International Airport will now serve as a benchmark for modern aviation standards in Nigeria. He added that the facility’s approval represents not only a win for Ogun State but also a significant step forward for the nation’s aviation sector.
